The Garden at Inverewe is the jewel in the Highland crown. It hosts an excellent shop and restaurant. There is also a small garden centre. The journey starts in Kyle. Sometimes we travel there by the long and exciting route via the delightful village of Lochcarron, the Bealach, a scary mountain pass, Applecross, Shieldaig and Kinlochewe. This road passes through the Torridon mountains; they are an unbelievable scenic experience. From Kinlochewe the road follows Loch Maree and eventually passes through a Victorian holiday town, Gairloch and on to lovely Poolewe. The Garden is less than a mile further on. To complete the round trip continue on to Achnasheen and then on to Kyle. The Garden is unique in that, at such a high latitude, it is full of exotic semitropical plants. It has one of the finest rhododendron collections in the UK. They are best seen in May and delight the eye. It has water gardens, arboretums, glorious viewpoints, palm trees, eucalytuses, an interesting walled garden, greenhouses, American plants, Australasian plants, a rare Davidia and a very large, well known, Magnolia which is covered in blooms every spring. There is so much to this, Gulf stream bathed, garden that you will continue to be enthralled as you explore it. Join the Scottish National Trust and you will get in free!
