Mallaig was once, in
recent times, the largest herring port in Europe. It still has a substantial
fishing fleet and an ideal venue for fresh fish and Kippers. It is a
bustling port from which ferries regularly depart for Skye and the other
nearby islands. The village can be seen from Armadale across the Sound of
Sleat and can be reached by a substantial, roll on, roll off ferry boat.
Mallaig hosts a variety of shops, a hotel, a railway station (the trains
travel to Fort William on one of the great rail journeys of the world)
and an aquarium. It is a fascinating village an easily reached via Armadale.
The road from Mallaig to Fort William passes through Glenfinnan where Bonnie
Prince Charlie raised his standard; there is an impressive memorial to him
on the site. A Harry Potter film was partly shot on this line!
