This lovely island is reached by ferry from Sconser in Skye. It has a number of interesting features, particularly the village of Inverarish. At one time iron minerals were mined here and the mine was served by a railway to the pier. There is a famous Georgian Mansion, Raasay House, which is now an outdoor centre with fine grounds and hotel. The island is crowned by Dun Caan, a flat topped mountain. It was here that Boswell and Johnson danced jigs on their tour of the Highlands. There must be mention of Calum's Road, a metalled road built by a crofter for a mile or so to his croft house, using simple tools and a wheelbarrow, an incredible feat of labour.
